Hi Amanda,

I'm very sorry for what's going on with your husband and his mother. I'm sure this is a difficult time for all of you.

My suggestion is to gently confront your mother's hoarding issue letting her know that she can't go on like this, and to offer to help clean up the place. If she refuses, then perhaps you can offer her to stay at your place or at a friend's home for a week or so? Anything to get her out of the house and around people - and maybe take her to a carnival or the zoo, or Greenfield village; this would hopefully cheer her up and get her in a better mood in which you can maybe talk her later into cleaning her home (with you and as many people as you know to assist her).

I hope this helps.

I'll keep you, your husband and his mother in prayer.

Take care, and God bless!

I'm looking for someone to assist my husband in dealing with his mothers hoarding issue. He is a person that can't easily express his feelings but he's being torn apart by this. He recently lost his father, who was unable to spend his final days at home, due to the hoarding issue. There is no room to walk in this house anymore. I have seen the show "Hoarders" and this is as bad as i've ever seen it. She isn't able to lay down to sleep anymore, is depressed, lonely, but will not confront the problem. I have told my husband that I will try to put him in contact with people that can help. We are at wit's end. Today, she suffered some kind of health issue and was unable to reach anyone but my son. My son lives in GA and was afraid to call 911 because he didn't want her to get in trouble because of her house! She is now in the hospital and this is the final straw. I need some ideas here. Who do I contact, where is help? Should we report her living conditions?
